Gypsy - my second viewing of this amazing Broadway production
So here’s update about the Wed. matinee performance of Gypsy. It was INCREDIBLE. Almost too amazing for words… almost, I say. Apparently I found the words, A LOT of words. Hence, it’s insanely long, so I’ll chop it up.
On Wednesday, I went to see Gypsy and it was even more amazing than the first time I saw it.
I had this entire week free and on Monday night I asked my mom if she would be alright with me going to the city by myself to see a Wednesday matinee of a show and she was completely fine with it. At first, I was a little surprised that she immediately said yes without asking a hundred questions, but at least I didn’t have to beg / annoy her, lol. Maybe this means I could see more shows by myself (i.e. during xmas break when I’m off for 5 weeks and wouldn’t have Jen or anyone else to come with me… hmm, lol).
Originally I was going to see either August: Osage County or Boeing-Boeing, then I just decided on B-B. Even though I want to see August more, I could just get balcony seats easily for B-B and didn’t feel like getting there early enough to rush August and would rather buy better seats in advance for that.
So I settled on B-B. But where did Gypsy come in? (IDK why I’m explaining this BTW, but oh well…). The night before, I was feeling kinda down about something so I started listening to Gypsy to try to cheer myself up. And then I thought, what better way to really make me feel better than to go see Gypsy, Patti and Laura (and Leigh Ann too)? Plus, I felt like sleeping in a little bit and wouldn’t have to worry about securing a seat since their rush is easy (luckily). So, it was a sorta last minute decision, but now I could go to sleep (at 3am finally) and had that to look forward to the next day.
I also wanted something more emotional, since I was feeling kinda “ehh,” and B-B wouldn’t have done anything for me since it was a comedy. I just needed something to help trigger some emotion and struck a chord with me, like I do with movies, ya know?
So on Wednesday, I slept ‘til about 10:30 and caught a train around noon. It was a little delayed, so by the time I had gotten to Grand Central and walked to the theater, it was after 1 o’clock. The understudy board was already up and I was happy to see that all the main people were in, esp. Laura<3. Now I was getting excited. =D I purchased my ticket and waited on line for the doors to open.
I THINK I saw Leigh Ann go in the SD while I was waiting to buy my tickets, but I wasn’t sure (and lord knows how bad my eyes are). It might’ve been one of the ‘Hollywood Blondes’ though b/c she seemed taller (Leigh Ann is TINY), but who knows. I wonder what time Patti goes in, lol… b/c the door is right there and there are lots of people there from like an hour and a half before the show starts, so I wonder if her, Laura and everyone else just walk by and go in, lol. Or maybe they there’s another door… lol.

(I just decided to add some pictures to my review that we took last time we saw it because... just because.)
My seat was H25 on the left. Last time we were in the right box, so I liked being able to have a different view this time. And I liked being in the orch. MUCH better. I felt like I could see everything better, including everyone’s facial expressions. It was marked as partial view, but there were only a couple times I couldn’t see someone standing all the way on the left b/c the sign was blocking them.
The show started and I was so happy. I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else.
I’ll try to remember some details and go through the highlights of the performance.
The overture is beautiful. It felt so comforting just to be there and hear the music live, after being sort of sad this week.
During the first scene, I kept peeking back to the rear of the theater because I saw Patti standing there, lol. I wonder when/how she just slips in, haha.
“Some People” is nowhere near one of my favorite songs, but I enjoy watching Patti perform so it was good, and she was pretty fierce during this.
The audience was really impressed with Baby June – damn, that kid can dance! And I always find myself “aww”-ing and feeling bad for Baby Louise when she’s always pushed aside.
Before “Goldstone,” Patti was like, “HAAAAAAAAAAAVE an eggroll!...,” the “have” being like an hour long in the beginning, lol. One of the guys grabbed Leigh Ann’s butt and she hit him, lol. And another time, that same guy was bothering her again and Tulsa came over and made him stop, haha… hmmm.

“Little Lamb” is simply beautiful because Laura and that voice of hers are so beautiful. If I was on the right side I would’ve had a perfect view, but it was still good. She always has to pause and wipe some tears away after the line “…or is it your birthday too?” Brilliant. Gah, I love that girl. I’m always in awe at this part because her voice is so gorgeous. I’m surprised I wasn’t moved to tears myself.
Patti was laughing a lot during “You’ll Never Get Away From Me.” At the end, she was still laughing and then Boyd just kissed her, haha… it was funny.
The “Farmboys” number… last time I was dying of laughter because I didn’t expect it to be so funny. I didn’t laugh that much this time, but I still enjoyed it. I couldn’t see Patti putting the pig and chicken things, which was a little disappointing. (I really hope my mom and Jo don’t miss that when they see it). I like Leigh Ann a lot during this scene. I love her emphasis on all the ‘Moo’s, as in “She’s so MOO-sical,” haha. But what was weird is that she dind’t jump on the cow at the end… I wonder shy. She just slapped its butt and grabbed its tail and walked off with it. Oh, and I love Laura’s :Moo moo moo moo”s too, LMAO.

I love “If Momma Was Married” and the scene right before it. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Laura because of all the little things she does. There was once instance during the song when the two girls were looking at each other (Leigh Ann was singing at the time, I think) and Laura stepped toward her as if she wanted to hold her hand or just wanted to get closer to her, but then she stepped back and Leigh Ann turned away. I don’t know if they meant to do that, but it seemed like an added nuance to me. And it broke my heart a little because these sisters are like alienated b/c of their mother and it’s sad. I love those two and I love watching them sing that song together.
Laura is amazing with her interactions with Tulsa and Herbie as well. The faces she makes, the little mannerisms – just brilliant. Her acting is always spot-on.

“Everything’s Coming Up Roses” was great. I love watching Patti do it.
*Intermission* ~ The odler woman next to me kept talking to me. She was telling me all the shows she’s seen and asked me what I’ve seen .We were talking about Xanadu a bit.
*Act 2*
During the “Toreadorables” part, Patti was in one of the girls’ faces… IDK what she was doing, but it was funny and the girl just kept on going, lol. Laura was adorable! She didn’t even attempt the cartwheel this time. She was like thinking it over and looked at Patti and then just turned around and did the “split,” LOL. Then she was so cute looking at Patti again while sitting on the ground and Patti just stares her down, lol.

“Together Wherever We Go” might be my favorite scene actually because the 3 of them are so great and so cute together. I love it! They might as well rename this song “Follow the Patti” b/c Boyd and Laura just watch Patti and do anything she does, haha. I couldn’t stop watching Laura. She was so funny, and did I mention how adorable she is, esp. during this. I can’t really describe the motions, but Patti did a lot of funny dances movies and voices and stuff and the other 2 just copied her. It’s great. It’s so much fun to watch. I wish it lasted longer, lol.
The audience was cracking up at the 3 strippers, esp. the 2 women behind me, lol. And when Electra lights up her bra or whatever ,Laura lets out a gasp/scream, which is funny.
After that, I was on the verge of tears for the rest of the show. I’m even sad during the whole strip number b/c when Gypsy Rose Lee is born, Louise is gone. That transformation is so vast and Laura does it so well that it’s like you’re watching 2 different people.

Laura was better than ever. She adds a lot of funny quirks and stuff. She said some of her lines differently than last time and I really liked that. When she lifted her dress up for “…make them beg for more…” I had a full view of her thong, lol… it was.. weird. Last time when we were sitting in the right box, we missed the entire “Beg” part – when she takes off her dress and says “Beggggg.” Well, being all the way on the left side, I could def. see her… all of her, lol. The rest of the strip montage was perfect. I esp. like when she talks to the guys in the audience.
She was extra sexy, that’s the only way to put it. I always miss Louise though.
The dressing room scene was intense. Patti and Laura were both more emotional than I’ve seen before. Laura was crying and had to wipe away tears at a couple moments, including when she turned around so the photographers didn’t see her crying.
Patti sang the shit out of “Rose’s Turn.” She was VERY emotional. And so was I. I didn’t know whether to cry or to cheer. I was almost about to burst into tears – I still don’t know if I was more happy or sad, but yeah… I was full of emotions.
And the ending I was still like that.
Curtain call – the audience was going nuts. Most people rose once Boyd and Laura came out, as did I. And of course the rest were all standing too for Patti.

It was such a brilliant performance. EVERYONE was perfect. Patti and Laura were the biggest standouts to me, esp. during this show. I love watching Patti perform, especially during her big songs – she’s crazy! haha. And I am like in love with Laura. She’s so brilliant in the role. Her performance breaks my heart every time, yet I love watching her.
I’m so glad I went to see it, I needed that. And I can’t wait to see it again. I can’t wait ‘til my mom and Jo see it for the first time, I can’t wait to see their reactions.
And I know during my xmas break hopefully I’ll be able to see a couple more shows by myself.
